June 11th
The pilot team is fervently working on developing a solution to prevent seaweed from entering the UV pilot system's pumps and methods to improve operations and maintenance (O&M) practices on the beach, ensuring continuous operation going forward.
As a reminder, the unexpectedly high concentration of seaweed is likely a remnant of the recent Nor'easter that occurred before system startup. While the seaweed does not pose an issue for the UV system itself, it does cause issues for the pumps feeding water to the UV system. During last week's 24-hour sampling period, we observed highly promising results: the water exiting the UV unit had minimal to no detectable bacteria.
Fortunately, both the City and Town have noted a reduction in seaweed concentration this week.
We look forward to reactivating the system, which we anticipate to do on Thursday, June 12th.
June 5th
Exciting news: The entire UV Pilot system was successfully run on Monday, June 2nd, during the day and through the night.
On Tuesday morning, a significant amount of seaweed had accumulated over the weir wall during high tide, which we believe may be related to the recent Nor’easter, leading to clogged pumps. As such, the system has been paused. Thanks to quick action, Sunbelt successfully cleaned the pumps and piping.
We have temporarily paused the system's restart as we work to develop an effective solution for the seaweed issue, which our consultants hope to have in the next day or so, working closely with Sunbelt, the Lynn Water and Sewer Commission, and the Town of Swampscott.
May 26th
Work in preparation for the UV pilot program is ongoing and will continue the week of May 26th.
The following work is planned:
- Installation of weir plates in culvert and completion of final connections between pumps and UV unit
- Full scale startup and commissioning of UV Pilot projected to begin on Wednesday, May 28th and last through Friday, May 30th

May 12th
Work in preparation for the UV pilot program is ongoing and will continue the week of May 12th and May 19th.
The following work is planned:
- The pumps and piping will be installed and connected the week of May 12th within designated staging areas.
- Jersey barriers and secure fencing will be fully installed after the pumps and piping are completed. The barriers and fencing will remain in place for the duration of the pilot.
- Electrical equipment and connections will be installed within the fenced staging areas.
- The generator will be delivered and connected the week of May 19th.
-The UV system will be delivered to the site on May 20th and a crane will be on site to set the UV system within the designated enclosure. Once in place, the plumbing and electrical connections will be made with startup and testing the remainder of the week.
Please note that the commencement of the pilot operation is aimed for Saturday, May 24th (Memorial Day Weekend).
During all times that contractors are working in the roadway, police detailing will be requested and traffic control signage will be employed to minimize disruption to traffic throughout the area. At various times, temporary detours will be required to facilitate the work. All construction activity will occur between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm.
April 28th
Work in preparation for the King’s Beach ultraviolet (UV) pilot program is projected to begin on Monday, April 28th.
The following work is planned:
- Saw cutting of pavement, excavation of trenches, and installation of conduits between the generator, pumps, and UV system locations. The trenches will be temporarily covered with steel plates until both the electrical and pump discharge piping are installed in the trenches. Upon completion, the trenches will be paved.
- Excavation for a new access hatch to the Lynn culvert in the median on Eastern Avenue. This work will occur during the week of April 28th immediately upon completion of the trenching.
- Jersey barriers and fencing will be installed upon completion of the trenches and the hatch to delineate and protect the staging areas for the pumps, generator, and UV system. The barriers and fencing will remain in place for the duration of the pilot.
- The pumps, piping, generator, and electrical equipment will be installed within the fenced staging areas during the two weeks following the completion of trenching (May 5th - May 16th).
- The UV system will be delivered to the site on May 19th and a crane will be on site to set the UV system within the designated enclosure. Once in place, the plumbing and electrical connections will be made with startup and testing immediately following.
Please note that the commencement of the pilot operation is aimed for Saturday May 24th (Memorial Day Weekend).
During all times that contractors are working in the roadway, police details and traffic control signage will be employed to minimize disruption to traffic throughout the area. At various times, temporary detours will be required to facilitate the work. All construction activity will occur between the hours of 7:00am and 4:00pm.
The upcoming pilot program will necessitate a lane closure on Humphrey Street and will also affect Eastern Avenue and Ocean Avenue. In response to inquiries from direct abutters, we are implementing temporary and partial resident parking on Eastern Avenue (addresses 1-37) for the duration of the pilot, which will be from approximately May to late August.
On Tuesday, April 22nd at 6:00PM in the Lynn Police Department, the Traffic Commission will announce this temporary resident parking update.
Following that meeting you will be able to register for a temporary resident parking permit by visiting Lynn.ThePermitPortal.com.
The City of Lynn has a street specific resident parking system. The vehicle is required to be registered to the address in order to receive the resident parking permit. Two (2) visitor passes are also provided free of charge. Resident permits and visitor permits are only issued to passenger vehicles.
For inquiries on parking, please contact the Parking Department at JChiappini@lynnma.gov
A key proponent of the pilot includes a beautification piece to the infrastructure that will be installed.
We are partnering with Beyond Walls to paint a mural that will be placed along the perimeter of UV pilot equipment and are currently seeking public input for the proposed artwork that will be displayed this summer.
Residents were invited to join Beyond Walls for a community meeting on Tuesday, April 22nd at Lynn City Hall. This meeting offered an opportunity for direct abutters of the pilot to share their ideas towards the artwork, including any themes, concepts, visuals, local stories, or references that could enrich the design.
Direct abutters unable to attend the community meeting can share their input on our input form at
